HIGHWAY TABERNACLE ~ RESURRECTION LIFE

“Following Jesus and Loving People”

Do you have a mentor? I believe people with experience with God and godly character can make excellent mentors. However, we need to expand our understanding of mentoring. As you read and study God’s Word, this can be the first and best mentor of all. I have been reading through the Book of John these days and have “stopped and parked” at many of Jesus’ teachings. My prayer is that Jesus would mentor me just as he did the disciples. I may not be able to see him, but he still communicates his life and truth. Allow me to share a passage through which Jesus is mentoring me, from John 8:28-29. “So Jesus said, When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am the one I claim to be and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me. The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him.” Here are some things I receive from Jesus here:

Jesus did “nothing on his own” (v28), but only spoke what the Father taught him. I am seeking Jesus for wisdom and grace to only speak words that are from God…words that build others up and meet needs. For this to happen, I must discipline my heart to “hear” his heart and to turn from vain thoughts.

Jesus was always conscious of the Father’s presence. He said, “The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone…” (v29). So, instead of just wandering around in life, we also can be “sent” just like Jesus. And, where God sends, he always provides. He will never abandon us.

Jesus delighted in pleasing the Father. He said, “For I always do what pleases him.” In this world of “people-pleasers”, how refreshing to hear the challenge to please God. As someone wisely noted, “If you displease God, it doesn’t matter who you please; and, if you please God, it doesn’t matter who you displease.”

Jesus, our mentor, will teach and enable you to bring massive glory to God! Have you met with your mentor lately?
