“Following Jesus and Loving People”

The Book of Revelation is an amazing book…in a class all by itself! A lady once told me, “I don’t read Revelation because it’s too scary.” For me, it’s just the opposite. I am encouraged and comforted when I read Revelation and here are some reasons why. First, the Revelation reveals the love and concern Jesus has for his church. The first three chapters reveal messages of Jesus to seven different first century churches (when Rev. was written down). We are clearly shown that Jesus not only knows what is going on, but is intimately involved in the churches. Jesus doesn’t forget about us! He’s not too busy.

Second, the Book of Revelation assures me that God not only created a plan, but that he will carry it out. No matter how rebellious and evil the world becomes, in the end Jesus and his people are winners forever!  My favorite verse in Revelation is 11:15 which says, “The seventh angel sounded his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, which said: ‘The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he will reign forever and ever.’” Wow! No matter what horrible story comes out next on the news, Jesus will set all things right. An older Pastor friend of mine used to often say, “Jesus will sort it all out.” What now seems chaotic and confusing will give way to true justice and lasting righteousness.

Third, the Revelation challenges me to overcome sin and live a holy life. As you read Revelation, you notice that it’s the minority that overcomes. The vast majority of people don’t get it, and don’t even want to follow the ways of the Lamb of God. Only those who place their faith in Jesus and demonstrate this by a life of holiness to the Lord, will escape the coming wrath. Even the idea of God judging sin causes a mere shrug among the masses…but God is still God. He loves people, but vows to judge sin. I want to be found in Christ, with my sins nailed to the cross. Revelation 12:11 tells us how to defeat evil and the evil one. “They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death.”

So, take the time to mine the wonderful treasures awaiting you in this last book of the Bible! We are told, “Blessed is the one who reads the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it, because the time is near” (Rev. 1:3).
