“Following Jesus and Loving People”

A Muslim man grew up around Christians, but no one shared the Gospel of Jesus with him for many years. He gave his life to Christ when he was older and made this observation: either Christians don’t care that much about others, or they don’t really believe what Jesus and the Bible says about heaven and hell. Ouch! I had to examine my own heart and ask, “Do I truly believe in Jesus and actively share my faith”? Too many Christians look at “witnessing” as a duty to be done only when absolutely necessary. In our cultural climate, we are afraid that sharing our faith in Jesus will get us in trouble or cause others to reject us. The Apostle Paul, when writing a short letter to his friend Philemon, said, “I pray that you may be active in sharing your faith, so that you will have a full understanding of every good thing we have in Christ” (Philemon v6). There are many ways to be active in sharing our faith. Usually, I don’t share my faith with someone the first time I meet them, especially if I know I will see them again. I want others to get to know me a little, so that when they discover I follow Jesus, there will be greater credibility. The best witness we can be for Jesus is by first living a godly, consistent life. This doesn’t mean we keep silent, but that we recognize the power of “showing” Christ before speaking for him. Sometimes in sharing Jesus, God will lead us to others, and sometimes he will lead others to us. Either way, we need to be prepared. Have a Bible nearby. Practice telling your story (or testimony) to others. Learn where the verses are which clearly show the way of salvation. The more we share our faith, the more our life takes on the sense of “mission”. In fact, to follow Jesus means we also embrace his mission. Furthermore, Paul (in Philemon) connects our sharing the faith with growing in our understanding of “every good thing we have in Christ”. Instead of diminishing us, sharing Jesus with others increases our understanding and gives us greater insight into the good things of God! Most of all, sharing Jesus with another may result in their salvation and eternity with Christ! Would you pray right now for Jesus to lead you to share him with someone?
