“Following Jesus and Loving People”

The longer I live, the more I value my health and the importance of strength and energy. While we inevitably slow down, we can continue to live fruitful, productive lives if we keep some simple principles in mind. I think some of the best advice about staying healthy is found in two simple words…keep moving! Our muscles were not made to just hang on our bones. Doing something…even a small activity is good for the body and soul. Speaking of soul, the idea of “movement” promotes spiritual health as well. Jesus warns us against being idle and asleep when he returns. We are told to “occupy” until he returns. The other day I was reading Proverbs 6:6 which says, “Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise!” Every time I observe an ant, it is in motion. I am not advocating “business” and activity as the answer to spiritual growth. Sometimes God’s assignment is for us to be still and know that he is God. And we are told repeatedly to wait on him. So, in the spiritual life, fruitful activity or “movement” is not a matter of merely “doing things”, but is rather purposeful focus, and continual love and devotion toward the Lord and his people. “Keep moving” means we never give up or give in to a dullness of heart or laziness of godly ambition. When it comes to obeying and following the Lord, most people are fast asleep, even as they are exhausting themselves in frantic activity. Don’t let it happen to you! Solomon, the writer of Proverbs goes on to say, “how long will you lie there, you sluggard? When will you get up from your sleep?” (6:9). Sometimes I feel my heart is too laid back toward the Lord. At these times, I discovered an important prayer to bring to him. It is, “Lord, I ask your Holy Spirit to stir up my spirit so I may have the desire, motivation, and obedience to please you.” Keep moving!
