“Following Jesus and Loving People”

“I’m praying for you.” These words from other believers have blessed me more times than I can remember. We all need prayer a lot more than we realize! Before giving himself over to those who would crucify him, Jesus spent his last few hours with his disciples doing what was most important. He shared his heart with them, and he prayed for them (John 17:9). Let’s remember, that even if no one else has time for us, Jesus is praying for us! When reading Jesus’ prayer, we discover specifically what Jesus prays for. We know he doesn’t pray that we never go through trials. He already warned us that if the world hated him, they will hate us also (John 15:18). He also said we would have trouble in the world (John 16:33). His prayer requests for the disciples (and for us) focus on two main things. First, Jesus prays for our protection from evil. He said, “My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one” (17:15). When we turn from evil and submit to God, we are answering the prayer of Jesus! He gives us the grace to overcome all sin and evil. Secondly, Jesus prays for our unity as God’s people. He said, “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me” (17:20-21). So here we have Jesus’ two most important prayers for us…separation from evil and loving unity with other believers. What is important to Jesus should be important to us. May you and I receive (and answer) the prayers of Jesus, knowing that, “He is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them” Hebrews 7:25.
