“Following Jesus and Loving People”

The Holy Spirit and Fire

Near the end of his life, Moses warned the Israelites that the God we serve is a consuming fire. (Deuteronomy 4:24). This description is interesting for its      contrast to Moses’ first encounter with God, whom Moses sees in a fiery bush that is not consumed.

Fire is an amazing thing.  It can heat a house, but it can also burn that house to the ground.  It can provide light for the eyes or blind them.  The same fire that melts butter hardens clay.  How fitting a symbol for the Holy Spirit is fire, which we must embrace with a healthy fear.

The consuming fire to which Moses referred is the fire of a jealous God. Moses tells the Israelites that God will not tolerate a return to idols when the people enter the Promised Land.  This warning is applied to the Christian church and our promised rest when it is quoted in Hebrews:

Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our “God is a consuming fire.”  Hebrews 12:29

The presence of the Holy Spirit in us is to be as it was with the burning bush – a fire ever burning, its fuel never consumed. At the same time, it is the fire of a jealous God that burns within us; a fire that consumes every idol in our spirit that asserts itself against God.

Although the Holy Spirit’s power is limitless, his power in our lives is subject to our free will and our choices.  As Paul points out, we have the power to quench the gift of Holy Spirit (I Thessalonians 5:19) or to fan it into flames (II Timothy 1:6). Will you choose today to welcome God’s consuming fire into every aspect of your life?
