“Following Jesus and Loving People”

Books with intriguing titles catch my attention. “The Power of Return” is such a book, given to me by a friend a few years ago. The author revolves his thoughts around the theme of God’s desire to forgive and restore his wandering, erring children. Throughout history, God’s people notoriously wandered from commitment and faithfulness…ending up in failure and moral collapse. It would seem that God has every right to shut the door of mercy…to say, “I don’t want to ever hear from you again.” But, the Bible describes God as “rich in mercy”. There is still pardon and power available for those who set their hearts on “return”. In my years of ministry I have never discovered anyone whose sin was so deep or too dirty for the blood of Jesus. The power of return is the power of God’s amazing grace to cover the past and recover the person to a place of dignity and honor in the family (think of the parable of the lost son in Luke 15). When we are restored, we are not grudgingly accepted as slaves, but joyfully received as full sons and daughters.

Psalms 80 reveals this power of return. The Psalmist draws near to God praying, “Restore us, O God; make your face shine upon us; that we may be saved” v. 4. He further promises, “Then we will not turn away from you; revive us, and we will call on your name” v. 18. All around us are people who may have once sought God, but now find themselves bound in sin and doing things they never imagined. God hasn’t forgotten them. He waits for their return. And remember, God wants you to tell them that He will forgive and restore. No  matter what has been done in the past, God has a great future for those who dare walk in the power of return!

Now that it is June, plan for a special prayer walk with hundreds of other  believers on Sat. June 28th at 10:00am. We start at the Salvation Army Headquarters building on Broad Street. What a great way to pray for our city and get a little exercise! Every person who participates in the walk is asked to purchase a God belongs in my city T-shirt.  Shirts can be purchased online at http://www.godbelongsinmycity.com/. To view info on June 28th, go the  website and go to The Walk, and wait for the map to show the icon for  Philadelphia.
