“Following Jesus and Loving People”

We want life to be easy…good grades without study, finances without work, health without discipline. However, “the way of easy” results in an empty, unproductive life. Who would want to go to a doctor who had easy classes, or trust a soldier who had easy training? “Hard” may not be desirable, but is often the best for us. I was reading John chapter 6 this morning and discovered how Jesus purposely said some hard things. Some people were following him because he multiplied the bread and fish. They thought, “now that Jesus is here, I can have an easy life, no more wondering where my next meal will come from.” But Jesus refused to be the “divine baker”. Instead, he instructed them to “feed on him”, putting fellowship and obedience to him first. He said, “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him” (John 6:56). His words were so difficult that many of his followers turned away.  As they left, they mumbled, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it”? In our day of “easy believism” many look at the commands of Jesus like a menu list at Burger King. “I want this, but not that”. I believe Jesus purposely says hard things and allows some hard experiences in order to grow our faith. If our faith is dependent on just blessings and easy experiences, we will walk away disillusioned, just as the “bread line” believers of John six. The Lord is looking for followers who will love and serve him, no matter if life is easy or hard. In the good times, it’s easy to praise the Lord; but it takes faith and perseverance to worship him in the difficult times.  And, let’s remember that the “testing of your faith develops perseverance” (James 1:3b).  May Jesus give us grace to go through the hard places!

“Following Jesus and Loving People”

Millions all over the world are watching a lot of soccer these days! The winners are ecstatic and the losers are…well, not so much. The Lord

has directed me to speak to you this Sunday about “Winners and Losers”. It’s one thing to lose a soccer game. What you don’t ever want to do is lose at life. We only have this “one game” and God’s desire is to make us winners! There is a “secret” to winning which God makes available. Pray, come, receive, and embrace this secret from God’s Word. You will be forever glad you did!

“Following Jesus and Loving People”

God loves surprises. That’s why there are so many in the Bible. Yesterday, I read Luke 24 where Jesus had risen from the dead and appeared to a couple of people as they were walking from Jerusalem to Emmaus. Instead of announcing himself, “I am Jesus” he builds a sense of drama as he asks them questions about what he just went through in Jerusalem. His question, “what things” is full of irony as Jesus already knows all. His probing questions are not for his      information, but for their revelation. And then at the dramatic moment, the two recognize that it is none other than Jesus himself who is walking with them!  Right after Jesus disappeared from their presence, they asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?” (Luke 24:32). Someone described believers in Jesus as “the company of burning hearts.” If serving God is boring for you, it is not because of Jesus. He plans a life of mission and adventure for every       believer. When the fire in our hearts starts to get low, God provides a solution. The two on the Emmaus road burned with excitement because: they were in the presence of Jesus and because they listened to the Word. I know of no greater ways to stir the embers of my heart than to come to the presence of Jesus through prayer and to listen to what he says to me through the Word. Jesus is not some rule or religion to follow. He is the Resurrected Lord and wants to keep your heart on fire for him and his kingdom! It was Jesus who said, “I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other!” (Rev. 3:15).

“Following Jesus and Loving People”

Hi Friends,

The Lord has been speaking to my heart about a message which I entitled, “The Power of Forgiveness”. Because we are all so imperfect and sometimes “fall down” spiritually, we can develop a defeatist mentality. We think, “Look at me, How can God ever use my life?” But God has plans for us which are accomplished because of the perfection of Jesus. He is willing to forgive and create in us an overcoming attitude  which enables us to live in victory over sin!

Come praying for the Holy Spirit to stir up hearts and to enlighten our spirits! We can expect great things because we serve a great God! I can’t wait to share this message because the power of forgiveness never grows old! May Jesus be glorified!

Secondly, because of the Wed. night service at RLC, there will be no Thurs. Family night. We will pick this up the following Thurs. June 26th.

HIGHWAY TABERNACLE ~ RESURRECTION LIFE

“Following Jesus and Loving People”

I once met a person with “tunnel vision” who described his situation as only  being able to see a narrow and limited field of vision directly before him. This condition didn’t seize him at once, but encroached gradually. In our walk with God, the developing of tunnel vision in our hearts is a real danger. The pressures and challenges of life can shrink our vision of God and his will for our lives until we become entirely focused only on our immediate and temporary circumstances. There is a remedy! As we read and meditate on God’s Word, the Lord enlightens the eyes of our heart and heals us from tunnel vision. In my devotions this morning I was reminded how God helps us see more of himself by showing us the wonders of his creation. He reveals the beauty and wonder of His world to help us not get trapped in the small and mundane of our world. Psalms 95:3-6 declares: “For the Lord is the great God, the great King above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to him. The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land. Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the lord our Maker.” We are  refreshed and renewed in our vision of God’s greatness when we stop to admire his work. Reading and imagining is healthy, but getting out into his creation is even better. Walk in the park, look at a mountain, and gaze at a lake or the ocean.

Summer is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and enlarge our vision of the One who made it all. May the Lord open our eyes to see God as big and our present difficulties as small!

“The Greatest Advice From a Father” is my sermon title for this Sunday. As I prayed about what to preach, the Lord directed me to a passage in the Bible which reveals a father giving his most important advice to his son. How blessed are those who allow the Lord and his people to speak into their lives with godly advice. Are you hungry for the Word? Are you open to receive? Do you have the desire and discipline to show up? Please know that this message is not just for Dads, because if God is your Father, this “greatest advice” is for you! Talk to the Lord about Sunday’s gathering and may his Spirit fill us completely…our minds with his Word, our will with his determination, and our emotions with his emotions.

With faith and anticipation,

Pastor Mark
