“Following Jesus and Loving People”

Expectations are huge. If you enter something new in life and your expectations are unrealistically high (more fantasy than reality), then you set yourself up for disappointment. For example, someone says, “If I just get this job, then life will be great”, or “If I can just get married, I know my life will turn from sad to happy.” When we place our faith and expectations on the circumstances or other      people, we can become “disillusioned”.

We were created to experience our fulfillment in the Lord. I have witnessed some new Christians excited about their new journey because they thought life would be one continuous “spiritual party” with no problems or trials. Let’s make no mistake…Jesus changes our lives infinitely for the better! However, he warned us many times that following him would present special trials and tests in the world. He promised strength, grace, and his constant presence, but never promised an easy, comfortable life. As we look at the life of Jesus, we see him filled with great joy in the midst of many difficulties. And, as we look through the Word, we realize the importance of faith and perseverance, understanding that these qualities can only grow in the soil of hardships. So, when it comes to   expectations, let’s look for our contentment to Jesus alone, and consider other people and the good things that come to us in life as blessings for which to be thankful. And, let us put our spiritual armor on each day…expecting life to    challenge us with issues that battle our souls.

Paul told the Ephesians, “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes” (Eph. 6:10-11). God is always good, even when life is hard!
