“Following Jesus and Loving People”

This morning I just finished Deuteronomy 34, the last chapter of the “Pentateuch”, also known as the Book of Moses. Having saturated myself in the life of Moses during the last two months, when I get to the end of his life, I feel a little emotional. It’s like I am reading about a friend dying.

Just before Moses died he left the Israelites a special blessing (found in Deut. 33). Something stood out to me in verse 16, which I never considered before. Moses speaking to the tribe of Joseph, prays they would be blessed “with the best gifts of the earth and its fullness and the favor of him who dwelt in the burning bush” (33:16). Notice here, Moses recalls his experience at the burning bush! As you remember, the call of God started at the bush in the desert over 40 years earlier (see Exodus 3).

In those many years of ups and downs, victories and defeats, joys and tears, Moses never forgot his calling. He “hung in there”! No greater compliment of Moses can be given than the words of Scripture from Hebrews 3:2 “Moses was faithful in all God’s house.” As I pondered and studied the life and ministry of Moses, I realized he endured a lot of trials and tests. He   persevered through it all because he was anchored in the Lord and always treasured the call of God on his life. My prayer for all of us is that we never forget the call of the Lord on our lives, and, no matter what happens, remain faithful. The One who called us is able to keep us and to accomplish his work through us. God bless you!
