“Following Jesus and Loving People”

Vision renews and changes life. To live without vision is to live in the dark, just passing time until the body falls over. In the Bible, we see vision connected to an “open revelation of God’s Word.” He reveals and we receive. A Pharisee named Saul thought he could see clearly until he had a vision from the Lord. In Acts 26 we read of Paul (formally Saul) sharing his testimony about God’s vision with King Agrippa. I notice two special insights from Paul’s account. First, true vision originates from above. Paul said, “I was not disobedient to the vision from heaven” V. 19. James also speaks of the wisdom that comes down from above. Furthermore, we are instructed by Jesus to pray to our Father, “Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” Life changing vision begins in the heart of God before being seen by us. And we see, through eyes of faith, not just what is happening, but God’s vision of change and growth that can happen. Heaven is not meant to be some far off “dreamy” place, only to be experienced in eternity. Through God’s vision we can experience in the present a taste of heaven touching earth. The kingdom of God exists to permeate and influence the kingdom of this world. We recognize that evil is strong and will increase before the coming of Jesus, but through God’s vision, we learn the secret of overcoming sin and evil. The second insight I see from Paul’s testimony is that vision from God   results in action. Faith without works is dead. In the vision to Paul, Jesus said, “I am sending you to them to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God”…v.17-18.

God has a vision for us individually and for us together as his church. His vision will require our careful attention and sustained obedience because the vision does not simply come one day and is fulfilled the next. We need strength and  perseverance to continually live out the vision. Our acts of faith and  obedience are used by God to bring hope and deliverance to those enslaved by the power of evil. Heaven is waiting to touch earth. Others are counting on us…will we be obedient to His vision from above?
